Taking care of your teeth is an important decision to make in life. It is not a difficult task to do but requires habit development for maintaining proper oral hygiene. The following steps are important in making sure that oral hygiene is maintained.
Brush Twice a Day
Brushing your teeth should be a daily activity that should not be skipped. To ensure that all teeth are cleaned thoroughly, take adequate time. Brushing should take at least two minutes. Ensure that you replace your toothbrush when it has worn out. A new toothbrush can maintain the cleanliness of your teeth at a low cost. Also, if you are using an electronic toothbrush, make sure you replace it regularly. Similarly, if you have kids, ensure that your children’s teeth are well maintained as soon as they get their milk teeth. Of course, it is easy to maintain regular cleaning, even on the go, as you can carry a toothbrush to school, work or on your travels.
Use Fluoride Toothpaste
Enamel is the most important part of a tooth. In order to maintain the strength of the tooth, use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride toothpaste can assist in protecting a tooth from decay. Fluoride content is important. Therefore, it is important for opting for a toothpaste brand that has a fluoride content of between 1,350 and 1,500 ppm. However, the content depends on the age of the user. For children, opt for toothpaste with fluoride at least 1,000 ppm of fluoride. To ensure that your toothbrush works effectively, put a small blob of toothpaste on the brush and thoroughly brush on the surface. After brushing the teeth, clean your mouth and spit the water.
Flossing removes particles and bacteria that have built up around the surface of the teeth. Initially, your gums may bleed due to the roughness. However, bleeding may stop after a few days of flossing. Flossing assists in making some parts of your teeth clean by strengthening the enamel. In this case, it is vital to floss before brushing the teeth so that the fluoride penetrates easily through the teeth. In case you find flossing awkward, incorporate an interdental cleaner.
Use Mouth Wash
Mouthwash can kill bacteria while at the same time keeping your breath under control. Mouthwash is readily available in many stores. You can also consider a homemade salt solution. Swish the mouthwash around the teeth for at least a minute to ensure that it gets to all corners. For homemade mouthwash, put a half teaspoon of salt into warm water and stir to dissolve. For commercial mouthwash, it is vital to check whether they have antibacterial properties. In this case, you can assert whether you can tolerate the content level. It can be a good idea if you put the mouthwash content into a water pick. You can clean all parts of the mouth without any issue.
Maintain a Good Diet
A good diet can save you from bacterial infections. Limit sugar consumption and reduce the amount of alcohol that you consume. Sugar content generates acids when broken down by the saliva. The acid generated can dissolve some components of the enamel making the teeth weak. Some of the sugar foods you must take in low quantities include sugary tea, coffee and sodas. Alcohol can also facilitate tooth decay, leading to degradation of the enamel. While it is advised to limit your alcohol consumption from a general health point of view, this is also important from an oral health perspective.
Taking care of your oral hygiene is an important part of your daily routine. Maintaining good oral health gives someone confidence when talking to colleagues or relatives. However, if your oral health is affected, there are several treatments that dentists can perform such as fillings, crowns and dentures. It is best, however, to avoid these treatments and follow the above guidelines to enjoy lifelong oral health.
