Can Apple Cider Help Your Acne?

If you can get past the strong smell of apple cider vinegar, you may find that it is just the product you need to finally have clear skin. If you’ve tried cleansers, dermatologist visits, and various face-washing routines and still find your skin to be filled with acne, apple cider vinegar may offer some natural (and inexpensive! relief. With claims to improve health, this vinegar has increased in popularity throughout the years. Although apple cider vinegar is believed by many to work miracles, can it actually clear up acne for good? If so, which type will work best?

Apple cider vinegar is made by crushing apples and pressing out the liquid. The magical liquid is thought by many to cure many health aliments from heart burn to obesity. While there are many different types of apple cider vinegar, for the purpose of this article we will be talking about raw, organic apple cider vinegar as that is the vinegar that is supposedly the best for us.

Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Live Strong, explains that all apple cider vinegars are made when the “sugar in the apple is converted into alcohol through a process called yeast fermentation. From there, the alcohol is then converted into acetic acid, which is the substance that […] provides all of the [supposed] health benefits.” Even though the beginning stages of making apple cider may be the same, there are differing steps that will change the impact apple cider could have on health.

Non-organic vinegar tends to appear as a clear liquid, whereas, organic apple cider vinegar will have a murkier look. Live Strong states that organic apple cider vinegar has “a rich, amber color that has a cloudy appearance referred to as the “mother of vinegar.” It is claimed that this mother of vinegar is where all the vitamins, minerals, and enzymes associated with apple cider vinegar are found.” Since non-organic vinegar is pasteurized, the mother is taken out and, therefore, the nutrients are most likely removed.

All Natural Acne Cure

Since organic apple cider vinegar still contains the “mother,” many health experts believe that it will be more likely to help various health aliments. Therefore, when it comes to our skin, vinegar with the mother in it is the only kind that may help to clear up acne. We already know that a lot of face-washes are actually damaging to our skin, but many of us still turn to them out of convenience. A health and wellness blog, Mind, Body, and Green, explains that “our skin is naturally acidic but, when we use harsh cleansers and soaps that natural acidity is disrupted […] Apple cider vinegar is so great for curing acne because it returns the acidity to our skin and restores that acid mantle.”  By adding apple cider vinegar as part of our face wash routine, we may be helping restore damage done by our face wash. Mind, Body, and Green explains that apple cider vinegar actually “kills bacteria, removes excess dirt, oil and makeup and dissolves dead skin cells.” Who knew something found in the kitchen could do all that for our skin?

Organic Vinegar Vs Apple Cider Vinegar

Verdict: For many people, apple cider vinegar works wonders. Like all the people who swear by dabbing apple cider vinegar on their faces, I believe in its powers. However, not all people will experience the same results. There is no proven research that apple cider vinegar will clear up acne–only first-hand accounts. Talk to your doctor about different remedies that can work for your skin. If you are interested in using apple cider vinegar, I’ve found that mixing it with equal parts water and then using a cotton to dab the mixture on your skin is best. Just remember, organic vinegar is the only way to go. Our go-to is Bragg’s ACV that can be bought mostly anywhere from Whole Foods to the Vitamin Shoppe.
