How to Heal your Bruises a Whole Lot Faster

We all get bumps and bruises during the course of daily life. However, sometimes it is not the best time for an ugly black and blue bruise in an obvious place or the pain of a bruise may be uncomfortable. Most bruises take around seven days to completely heal, but is there anything that can be done to facilitate the healing process and possibly make it shorter? There actually are some things you can do to help the healing process along. Here are some tips on how to heal your bruises a whole lot faster.


Ice is a miracle drug that isn’t a drug. If you can get ice on an injury almost immediately after it happens, you will significantly shorten the healing time for most injuries that don’t involve broken bones or lacerations. A great tip is to purchase a gel type ice pack that is kept in the freezer at all times in case of injury. This is especially helpful if you play sports or have kids. In any event, you can make an ice pack out of a quart size freezer bag and ice from your freezer. Place the pack on the injured area as soon as possible after injury and leave in place for 15 minutes. You may want to wrap your pack in a towel to protect your skin. Alternate the ice pack on and off every 15 minutes for a couple of hours. Ice reduces swelling and inflammation which helps with the discomfort and pain of a bruise.


If they bruise or injured area is on a limb, it is a smart idea to elevate the injury above the level of your heart. This increases blood flow, which helps in the healing process. Keep the injury elevated the first couple of hours while you are applying the ice. Avoid any strenuous physical activity as well during the healing process.


As the bruise starts to heal you can apply a gentle massage to the bruised area. You should use the pad of your thumb and rotate around the outer edges of the bruise. This increases blood flow and allows for faster healing.  While you are massaging the area you can also add a mixture of vinegar and water or witch hazel to the bruise and massage it in as well. This helps with swelling and inflammation.


Finally, as the bruise starts to turn yellow you can go out and expose the bruised area to sunlight. The yellow color is the bilirubin in your body. This is similar to jaundice. Sunlight helps your body break down bilirubin which allows the bruise to fade faster.

If you are experiencing pain, you can also take ibuprofen to help reduce the pain and swelling. Following these tips on how to heal your bruises a whole lot faster can fast track your healing process and hopefully that bruise will be all gone in three to four days instead of seven!
