Hair is one of the first things we notice on a person, and we spend hours—and lots of money—to keep it looking its very best. Those of us who are plagued with dandruff, however, know that it is one hair issue that’s difficult to conquer despite our best efforts.
There are special shampoos that are made to help treat dandruff, but why spend money on products if a natural remedy could do the job just as well? Already known as a popular ingredient in both the kitchen and homemade beauty remedies, some claim yogurt is the salvation from an itchy, flaky scalp.
Dandruff can stem from various factors. A medical information website, Medical News Today, explains that “human skin cells are forever renewing themselves. As skin cells in the scalp are renewed, the old (dead) ones are pushed to the surface and then out of the scalp; they are literally expelled.” For most of us, this process goes unnoticed; however, for those with dandruff, the process is very noticeable. Medical News Today states, “for people with dandruff, the new cells are produced at a faster rate than they die, resulting in more skin being shed, making dandruff more noticeable.” While the condition isn’t serious, dandruff may still cause embarrassment or discomfort.

Medicated shampoos may help to treat dandruff, but if you want to give something else a try, let’s consider yogurt. Popular in many face mask concoctions, yogurt is no stranger to the beauty world. Its high content of lactic acid and zinc can help nourish hair, but can its effects work on dandruff? A news website, The Huffington Post, found that, when experimenting with different remedies for dandruff, yogurt yielded positive results. The study took place “over a period of two weeks, [and the participant was to] apply the remedy to dampened, product-free hair before washing with a non-detergent (and non-medicated) shampoo,” The Huffington Post explains. After the two weeks were over, the participant stated that the yogurt “felt cool and soothing […and] it did reduce flaking ‘significantly’ […but] it took two shampoos to rinse out and left hair flat,” The Huffington Post concludes. When compared to other alternatives used in the study, like lemon juice and egg whites, yogurt proved to be one of the most effective.
A natural remedy informational website, Five Remedies, says to “work plain, nonfat yogurt into your scalp, let sit for thirty minutes, and then rinse thoroughly. The Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria (probiotics) in the yogurt devour the yeast that feed on sebum oil [which] causes dandruff.”
Verdict: Fact. Although extensive research on this topic hasn’t been done, several sources do suggest that yogurt will help lessen dandruff. Try massaging yogurt into your scalp to see if your dandruff can be beaten without having to purchase expensive products.
